EVA'S VILLAGE
PATERSON, NEW JERSEY
A low rise 53,400 square foot apartment building comprised of 51 apartments.
Located in Paterson, New Jersey Eva's Village is a low rise apartment building that houses marginalized individuals and families wishing to re-enter mainstream society. Working with Poskanzer Skott Architects, the scale and massing of the building are in keeping with the surrounding neighborhood. The facades evoke a modern design that is meant to encourage the residents to look forward towards a hopeful future, rather than into the past. The various scales and styles of cladding are composed as a modern painting with vertical fin-like elements that serve as visual devices to organize the materials and color palette. Traditional double hung windows are employed throughout the building to unify the whole composition and underscore the residential nature of the building. The base of the building is wrapped with brick and serves as another unifying device for the overall composition. The brick veneer becomes part of the fabric of the surrounding neighborhood of brick houses. In addition to this, the brick celebrates Paterson’s past history as a town of industrial mills.
The brick base at the western end of the building appears to float above walls of glass and becomes an open, welcoming gesture to the local community. This space is home to a restaurant that serves as a training classroom for the building residents. The restaurant is also open to the public in order to draw in the local neighborhood to Eva’s Village and enrich the community.
