MECCA FAIRMOuNT APARTMENTS
JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY
A low rise 61,200 square foot apartment building containing 39 apartments and retail shops.
Working with Poskanzer Skott Architects, this low rise apartment building not only contained a residential component which was represented by the low rise block, but also integrated a 1 story component of storefronts along the sidewalk. The inclusion of retail in the building complex was seen as a device to add to and reinforce the existing retail shops the form the Fairmount Avenue street front.
The primary material of the facades would be brick veneer cast in the traditional running bond pattern. Brick was employed throughout the project to emphasis both the residential character of the building and its low rise scale. Precast window sills and heads are stretched beyond the windows to become horizontal accents across the brick facades. In between the precast horizontal accents, the brick was rendered in soldier courses. With these details and the use of green metal window frames and green metal corner posts placed in strategic locations, the facades take on an Art Deco spirit. This Art Deco spirit is completed by the tall thin precast and metal spire that rises at the main entrance of the residential lobby.
